The Culture of Transactional Politics in Indonesia's Gubernatorial Elections Since Reformation

Since initiating political reform in 1998, Indonesia has sought to restructure its institutions and processes as a means of reinforcing public autonomy. This article explores the three direct gubernatorial elections that have occurred North Sumatra since process was first implemented, namely 2008, 2013, 2018. We interviewed key actors, including candidates, party leaders, electoral agents, analyzed cultural practices corruption bribery. The local elections' examinations reveal transactional politics through practice exchange offices, thereby having deleterious effect on services Provincial Government. Moreover, culture tends accept provision receipt bribes gratuities during elections. study contributes discourse beliefs go against values democracy threaten established systems.
